ByteDance and Alibaba kill custom AI companions as China’s new rules bite

ByteDance's Doubao and Alibaba's Qwen are disabling their custom AI companion features ahead of China's new regulations on anthropomorphic AI interactions effective July 15. Tencent had already removed a similar feature in June. The rules target AI bots offering sustained emotional interaction, exempting workplace and productivity assistants.
