India tells WhatsApp to pause its usernames feature pending consultations

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has ordered Meta to halt WhatsApp's rollout of a new usernames feature over concerns it could facilitate fraud and impersonation. The ministry has given Meta three days to respond before potential regulatory action. WhatsApp had planned to let users reserve unique usernames to start chats without sharing phone numbers, but the government fears this could aid identity spoofing.
