Open weight takes 71.5% of tokens and 23% of spend

Open-weight AI models now handle 71.5% of tokens routed through AI Gateway and account for 23% of spending, a fourfold increase since June 2026. Token volume and spending on these models have surged, with cheaper models driving volume and pricier ones driving spend.
