Teaching AI to Read a Map

Multimodal large language models struggle with fine-grained spatial reasoning like tracing paths on maps due to lack of explicit training data. Researchers introduced MapTrace, a synthetic data generation pipeline producing 2 million QA pairs to teach MLLMs path tracing skills, and released the dataset to foster further research.
