What's the difference between TPU vs. GPU?

Google developed the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) in 2015 as a specialized AI accelerator for cloud data centers, optimized for machine learning tasks. The TPU term also appears in Pixel 11 smartphones, where it functions similarly to a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for local AI and image processing, differing from data center TPUs and GPUs.
