AI Agents Are Using an Outrageous Amount of Electricity

Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather estimated that using Anthropic's Claude Code AI assistant consumes between 1.2 to 5.9 kWh daily, more than two refrigerators running continuously. Most energy is used as the AI repeatedly re-reads its own context during task execution, leading to significant electricity use and emissions when scaled across many users.
