Mistral raised $3.5 billion in a Series D round, valuing the company at over €21 billion, to expand frontier AI research, increase compute capacity, and develop infrastructure. The company aims to challenge the concentration of AI compute power by building more of the AI stack beyond just open-weight models. This approach addresses limitations of open-weight models, which still rely on concentrated compute resources.
